Basically socialization is desensitizing the dog to potential triggers.

The importance of socialization is that with any kind of potential triggers around, the dog still has good manners and obedience.

The more we socialize them to potential triggers early on in their live, the more we desensitize those triggers for the rest of their live.

You could do this later on in the dogs live aswell it only will require a bit more effort as the dog is then already through their early learning period.

Good adequate socialization will result in a more balanced dog that stays calm and relaxed with good manners and still looks up to us for guidance and direction so we can utilize our obedience in all different kind of situations.

Early positive and appropriate socialization is a must.
